Genie Torsion Spring Replacement: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

A Genie torsion spring replacement in Fort Worth typically costs between $180 and $340 installed, depending on your door’s weight and spring size, and most homes can be back in working order the same day we arrive. We stock Genie-compatible torsion springs on our trucks, which means no second trip for parts and no waiting on a distributor. You’ll usually know the spring has failed before you ever look at it: a door that suddenly won’t lift, or a loud bang from the garage that sounds like someone dropped a toolbox from the attic.

The torsion spring is the counterweight system above your garage door that does the heavy lifting. When it breaks, the opener alone can’t raise a 150 to 250 pound door. And in Fort Worth, where summer heat cycles and the humidity swings between April and October put real stress on spring steel, these parts fail more predictably than they do further north. If your Genie door won’t open and the spring above it has a visible gap, you’ve found the problem.

Which Genie Models This Applies To

We replace torsion springs across the full Genie lineup, including the IntelliG, TriloG, and Mach Force series, along with older Genie screw-drive models that predate the current branding. The spring itself doesn’t care whether you have a Genie opener or a Chamberlain opener on the ceiling; what matters is the door’s weight, height, track radius, and cable drum setup. That said, Genie’s proprietary cable drums on some IntelliG configurations use a slightly different barrel profile, and a generic spring cut to length without accounting for that drum will bind after a few hundred cycles. We measure the old spring’s wire diameter, inside diameter, length, and wind direction before we cut anything.

Most Genie doors in Fort Worth take either a standard .225 or .250 wire-diameter spring on a 1.75-inch inside diameter, but there’s real variation once you get into older custom-installed doors out near the Cultural District. We’ve measured springs on doors that were installed when the house was built and found the original spec written in pencil on the tube. The good news is that identifying the right spring takes us about ten minutes with a caliper and a spring gauge. If you don’t have the original paperwork, we don’t need it.

On OEM versus aftermarket: Genie doesn’t manufacture springs in-house; they source them through the same major spring producers we use. An OEM-labeled Genie spring and a quality American-made equivalent with the same wire, ID, and length are functionally identical. We stock name-brand springs that meet or exceed OEM spec, and we’ll tell you exactly what we’re installing before we touch the door.

Signs Your Genie Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing

Unlike rollers or cables, a torsion spring rarely gives weeks of warning. But there are a few tells that show up before the loud snap:

  • A visible gap in the spring above the door. If the spring is in two pieces with a two-inch break in the coil, it’s done. This isn’t a wear item you can nurse along; a broken spring cannot be reconnected.
  • The door feels unusually heavy when you pull the manual release. A healthy spring stores enough force to counterbalance most of the door’s weight. If lifting the door by hand feels like a deadlift, the spring has lost tension or cracked internally.
  • Creaking, popping, or grinding from the spring area while the door moves. Coils that rub against themselves or against a dry bearing plate are telling you the spring is binding. In Fort Worth’s dusty summers, a dry spring is a ticking clock.
  • The opener strains or reverses on the way up. Genie openers have force sensing built in. If yours is running harder than it used to and the spring hasn’t been replaced in eight or more years, the spring has likely lost its rated torque.
  • Cables look loose or the door sits crooked in the opening. A tired spring lets one side drop before the other, which pulls cable slack and throws the door off level. That slack is a safety issue, and the fix is the spring, not the cable alone.

A safe note here, plainly stated: torsion springs hold enough stored energy to break bone or cut through a cable. We never recommend winding or unwinding one without the right bars and a trained hand. What you can do safely is pull the release handle with the door closed, try lifting the door a few inches, and give us a call with what you find.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Fort Worth, a Genie-compatible torsion spring replacement runs $180 to $340, including the spring, installation, and a full re-balance of the door. The spread comes down to three things: how many springs your door uses (dual-spring doors need both replaced even when only one breaks, since the surviving spring is usually at the same fatigue point), wire diameter and spring length, and whether your door needs any secondary hardware like a center bearing or cable drum replaced while we’re in there.

Service Fort Worth Price Range
Single torsion spring replacement $180 – $260
Dual torsion spring replacement $260 – $340
Spring + cable replacement (pair) $300 – $380
Spring + roller replacement (set of 10) $290 – $440

Every quote is written down and handed to you before any work starts. That number includes the spring, the labor, the balance check, and our clean-up. It does not change after we open the door and look at the shaft, unless you ask us to add work that wasn’t in the original quote. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the spring and the install for a full year: if it’s not right, Jesse Calder or one of his crew comes back and makes it right, no negotiation.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do on your own: identify that the spring has a gap, measure the door’s height and width, note your Genie model number from the opener rail or the motor housing, and call us with that information. That helps us bring the right spring on the first trip.

What we’d rather you not do: attempt to loosen or remove a torsion spring, reuse an old spring from another door, or try to “tighten” a spring that’s lost tension. These are not tasks where patience substitutes for the right tools. A torsion spring under load stores about 100 to 200 foot-pounds of torque, and when a winding bar slips, that energy goes somewhere fast. We’ve been called out to garages where a DIY attempt bent a winding bar and left the spring half-wound against the bearing plate. The repair cost after that is higher than the original spring job.

If you’d rather have us handle the whole thing, including matching the spring to your Genie model and re-balancing the door, call (682) 354-9140. We’ll get a live person on the line, answer your questions, and schedule a time that doesn’t conflict with nap schedules or school pickups.
